Students remanded

Three executive members of the Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) have been remanded in judicial custody in connection with a case registered at Lamphel police station before they were formally arrested in connection with another case registered at Imphal police station.
DESAM Assistant Secretary General Sorokhaibam Rokiyo (20) s/o Manikhomba of Pukhao Leitanpokpi, anti drugs campaign secretary Pilot Khangembam (23) s/o Yaima of Bishnupur Thiyam Leikai Ward No 8 and Finance Secretary Oinam Surjakanta (29) s/o Shelungba of Thoubal Athokpam Khunou were arrested yesterday and produced before a duty Magistrate, Imphal West along with a prayer for judicial custody remand by a team of Lamphel police station today.
According to the APP, the three executive members revealed that office bearers of DESAM held a meeting at around 11 am on Thursday and discussed the recruitment process of pre-primary teachers by the State Government and decided to protest against the recruitment process.
Later it was decided to storm the SSA office, Babupara and Education(S) office.
Lamphelpat in protest against the selection process of the pre-primary teachers, they reportedly revealed during questioning by police.
At around 11.30 am volunteers and office bearers of DESAM numbering around 80 stormed the office Samagra Shiksha Abhiyaan, Babupara, met the Director and later took the chair from his office.
They also vandalised the office room, broke window glasses.
The DESAM volunteers further stormed the office of the Director of Education(S) Lamphelpat and destroyed window glasses, and locked the office.
APP submitted that apart from vandalising the offices , the DESAM volunteers obstructed the staff from discharging their duties.
The Court, after hearing the submission of the APP and on perusal of the case record, remanded the trio in judicial custody till June 28 .
In the meantime, team of Imphal police station filed an application before the same Court for formal arrest of the trio in connection with another but similar FIR case registered at Imphal police station for allegedly obstructing staff of Samagra Shiksha Abhiyaan Office, Babupara from performing their official duties and destruction of Government properties worth around Rs 97,000 .
After perusing the application, the Court granted the prayer for making formal arrest of the DESAM office bearers.
They are likely to be produced before the same Court tomorrow by Imphal police station in connection with the second FIR case.
