Landmines kill, maim many on Indo-Myanmar border

Many villagers have been killed, maimed or injured in landmine explosions planted by Myanmar militants inside Manipur along the stretch starting from border pillar number 91 to border pillar number 94 .
According to Southern Tangkhul Union chairman Somi Angkang, many villagers have been killed or injured and several cattle have fallen victims to landmine explosions in the border region from BP No 91 to 94 between May 1 and July 26 this year.

There was another incident of a landmine explosion near Z Choro village in the second week of May, 2024. One refugee staying at Aloyo, Kamjong sustained injuries in the explosion.
A 21 year old youth who went to pluck mangoes was killed when another landmine went off in between Kaka and Myanmar's Phayang on May 17, 2024, Somi Angkang said.
Two persons sustained injuries in a landmine explosion near Wanglee on May 22, 2024.Two other persons escaped with injuries from another landmine explosion at Namlee.
Landmine explosion claimed one more life and inflicted critical injuries to two others at Wanglee market on July 25 .
A small kid reading in Class II too fell victim to a landmine explosion in between Wanglee Market and Myanmar's Phayang.
The kid was killed on the spot, Somi said.
Myanmar based militants have been literally terrorising the villagers by planting hundreds of landmines in the border region.
Villagers are fearful of even venturing out of their homes/villages, he said.
Apart from the human casualties, landmines have killed several cattle and other animals.
Asking who would remove these landmines planted in the border region, the Southern Tangkhul Union chairman said that the villages are staying away from agricultural fields for fear of landmines.
He then urged the authorities concerned to look into the issue as a matter of utmost urgency.
