Imphal, August 01 2024:
Assam Rifles conducted a wreath-laying ceremony in honour of rifleman Man Bir Thapa, who made the supreme sacrifice on August 1, 1966, during intense counter insurgency operations in Mizoram.
On July 29, 1966, Mizo National Front militants launched an attack on Alpha Company Number 3 Platoon of the 1st Lushai Hills Battalion.
They began indiscriminate firing with automatic guns, LMGs, and 2-inch mortars from the south and west.
Rifleman Man Bir Thapa responded courageously, thwarting the militants' nefarious designs and driving them away.
He was wounded during the conflict and died from his injuries on August 1, 1966, at Command Hospital, Lucknow, recounted PRO IGAR (S) in press release.
The ceremony included wreath laying, guard of honour and speech by commandant of the unit, who exhorted all ranks to honour the martyr by following his example of selfless duty.
