Imphal, August 01 2024:
Congress MLA K Ranjit of Sugnu assembly constituency criticised use of tear gas shells and live rounds to disperse a rally taken out by the internally displaced persons (IDPs) taking shelter at Akampat relief camp for airing their grievances and assault of the journalist by police.
During Zero Hour of Thursday's session of the ongoing Assembly, MLA Ranjit recalled the CM's statement about allowing rallies taken out on June 24 in four districts demanding creation Union Territory within the state of Manipur, due to respecting rights of the people in democracy.
Asserting that the rally participants, who are taking shelter in relief camps may not have weapons in their hands, he pointed out that the rally might have taken out to express their grievances during the assembly session.
There are reports of atrocities committed against the rallyists by even firing live rounds to disperse them.
As such, he urged the government to instruct the DGP to refrain from such brutal crackdown.
