Kakching, May 25 2025:
An awareness programme on 'Land Laws of the Hill Areas' was jointly organised by Manipur State Commission for Scheduled Tribes (MSCST) and Lamkang Kurchuknao Kunpun/Lamkang Students' Union (LKK) at Leingangching village community hall, Chandel district on Saturday.
The programme held with MSCST chairperson Thuingai Mathieu Rongmei and member Sankhil Shetlengam as special guests was attended by Chandel Nagar People's Organisation (CNPO) president Dilbung Thamdok Francis, other members, Western Lamkang and Eastern Lamkang village chiefs, religious leaders, students and villagers while MSCST Investigation Team chairman advocate Daniel Ramsan and CAF&PD counsellor Advance Leivon Robert were the resource persons.
In his address, Mathieu Rongmei opined that if land laws specific to hill areas are framed and enacted then neither would there be encroachment on tribal lands by others nor forest products land in the hands of outsiders.
Hence, tribal legislators and civil society organisations should press for passing of land laws for hill areas in the Manipur Legislative Assembly, he recommended.
