Imphal, August 15: Even though the Government of Manipur has sanctioned lakhs of rupees for the development of Lilong Haoreibi College, there has been no sign of developmental works being taken up in the college and it continues to suffer from want of requisite infrastructure.

This came to light during an inspection conducted by a joint team of DESAM and student union of the college today.

Later talking to media-persons, representatives of the college student union pointed out that the fund released by the Government for ground levelling, renovation of Principal's room, construction of multipurpose hall, repairing of the class rooms, library and other infrastructural development of the college are not commensurate with the funds earmarked for the work.

Secretary of Boys Common Room of the college Md Farid Khan informed that Rs 4.50 lakhs had been sanctioned for ground levelling.

Though the amount has been withdrawn, there has been no sign of ground levelling.

After the development of a footpath that too only for a short distance, no further work had been carried out.

For the renovation/repairing of the Principal's room a sum of Rs 2.5 lakhs had been sanctioned and although 50 percent of the amount had been withdrawn, the work has been stopped only after applying paint, he added.

Moreover, for infrastructural development an amount of Rs 2.5 had been sanctioned.

But out of the total 16 class rooms, fans and tube lights have been fitted only in six rooms though the sanctioned amount had been withdrawn, the student leader lamented.

For construction of two class rooms, Rs 4.50 lakhs had been sanctioned.

But the work had been executed without any quality control.

The desks and benches of the college have also been cut and used for the doors and windows of the class rooms, he informed.

In November 2007, a sum of Rs 33 lakhs, sanctioned for construction of a multi-purpose hall of the college, has been withdrawn.

But after the execution of the work for around Rs 3 lakhs, no further work has been taken up.

When the matter was brought to the notice of the Engineering Cell, it was learnt that 50 percent of the fund had already been withdrawn.

So until and unless an agreement has been brought about between the Engineering Cell and the student union, restriction has been imposed on further construction of the hall, the student body announced.

The student body further informed that subsequent to the devastating flood in 2007, a sum of Rs 1.20 lakhs had been withdrawn for cleaning up the debrises from the college.

But nothing had been done os far.

Another sum of Rs 4.90 lakhs had also been withdrawn for repairing of the college building after it was affected by the flood.

But instead of repairing the building, repainting of the exterior of the building had been done.

Secretary of the college BM Faruque demanded the work being taken up to construct four class rooms by some persons at the behest of the college authorities without consulting anybody nor receiving work order should be stopped at once.

The class rooms should not be constructed without any quality control, he added.

He also urged for substituting the current members of the College Development Committee by those who would work sincerely for the development of the college.

The mediapersons were further informed that there is no toilet facilities in the college as the old one is not usable any more.

Asking the students to attend college regular, Faruque make it clear that no student would be allowed to fill up their forms for appearing in the examination if they do not maintain 75 percent attendance.

The principal of the college maintained that he could not comment anything on the present condition of the college as he had been just appointed and posted in the college since August 8 this year.
