'Evacuate from flood plains'

The Water Resources Department has advised evacuation of people residing in the flood plains of Imphal River within Imphal city.
According to an advisory issued by Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Water Resources Department, Ningthoujam Geoffrey, the rainfall received in Kangpokpi from 6 am of May 28 till 6 am of May 31 (72 hours) is a total of 13+39+123=175 mm.
Based on past trends, an average daily rainfall of 45 mm for three consecutive days (a total of 135 mm in a 72 hour period) in Kangpokpi, which is the catchment area of the Imphal River, leads to floods in the Imphal Valley.
Kangpokpi received a rainfall of 131 mm in a 24 hour period in the aftermath of Cyclone Remal in May 2024, leading to river breaches, overflows and widespread floods and devastation in the Imphal Valley.
From 6 am of May 30 till 6 am of May 31 alone (24 hour period), a total rainfall of 123 mm has been recorded at Kangpokpi.
At 10 am today, the Imphal River was already flowing above 'High Flood Level' .
Overflows accompanied by breaches have already taken place at a few locations.
The surface run off of rain waters from Kangpokpi will now be reaching Imphal valley, and is expected to lead to overflows at more stretches along the Imphal River,
the advisory said.
