Shokvao village honoured for forest protection

Shokvao village in Ukhrul district has received official recognition from Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla for its outstanding efforts in protecting forest areas from devastating fires through the forest area closure initiative under the Community-Based Sustainable Forest Management for Water Resource Conservation (COS-FOM-KfW) project.
The villagers' dedication was acknowledged during the 76th Van Mahotsav Festival Grand Finale, held Monday at the City Convention Hall in Imphal.
Shokvao headman Reimi Makang', and Water Re source Conservation Group (WRCG) Shokvao chairman Johnathan accepted the recognition certificate on behalf of their village.
A delegation from Ukhrul district, led by district forest officer (DFO) Laishram Gitla, participated in the environmental celebration.
During the ceremony, Governor Bhalla also distributed symbolic seedlings to students from each district, representing the transfer of environmental stewardship to the younger generation.
Leishangthem Sylvia Shimray Chanu, a Class X student from Ukhrul Central School, received the seedling for Ukhrul district.
Notably, the recognition marked the success of the COSFOM Project's interventions in the district with the forest area closure initiative in Shokvao witnessing significant ecological recovery within the protected areas where the Slow Loris, a Schedule ! protected species, has been spotted after a considerable period.
