Chemical fertilizers impacting Jiribam denizens: AITUC

Even as the people of Jiribam are enduring serious hardships as sporadic violence continues in the border district for over days, their sufferings getting compounded as authorities concerned are yet to make proper arrangement for storage and transportation of chemical fertilizers being staked at the Jiribam railway station, expressed All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Manipur State Committee.
In a statement, AITUC, Manipur general secretary L Sotinkumar lamented that bags of fertilizers allotted to Manipur for use in the kharif season are left uncovered on the platform of the railway station.
Due to rainfall, these bags have begun to liquefy and leak subsequently spilling over into agricultural lands in Dibong, covering approximately 40 acres.
As a result, crops in the area are damaged due to excessive presence of fertilizer, a significant health risks to humans in the affected areas.
The statement also pointed out the urgent need for the abandoned fertilizer bags to be securely covered and promptly transported to Imphal.
A team of AITUC Manipur State Committee will conduct an on-site investigation into the matter, the statement informed.
