MLA Dingo calls for improving agriculture sector

Sekmai MLA Heikham Dingo has strongly called for more emphasis on increasing agricultural production to improve the state's agrarian-based economy.
MLA Dingo gave the clarion call during a farmers' training programme cum distribution of urea fertilizer and agriculture inputs organised by the agriculture department at Loitang Khunou Maning Leikai community hall under Sekmai assembly constituency on Tuesday.
As chief guest of the programme, H Dingo said the ongoing conflict since May, 2023 affected agricultural activities in many parts of the state more particularly in Sekmai assembly constituency as it falls under the red-zone.
Amid the situation, poor condition of roads hampers distribution of urea fertilizer to farmers and accordingly took steps to reach out to the primary food producers, he said adding that 21 truck-load of urea had already been distributed to farmers of the constituency earlier.
Expressing that the most important task of agriculture department is to ensure availability of fertilizer to the farmers, the MLA commended the department for smooth distribution of urea this year.
Director (agriculture) Peter Salam, who also attended the programme, said the agriculture department has provided 1,10,000 bags of urea to farmers for Kharif season in 2024 and is targeting provision of 2 lakh bags of urea this year.
He also said that the department is working hard to ensure adequate supply of urea to farmers.
The programme was also attended by district agriculture officer S Kenedy, department's nodal officer Kh Nimaichand and agriculture ministry's senior technical officers Koushik Dutta and Arunnidhi K.At the end of the programme, farmers of the area were provided urea, agricultural inputs and seeds.
