NH-37 snapped, vehicles stranded

Imphal, May 28 2024:
The incessant rainfall
since late Monday night has
affected the lifeline of Manipur disconnecting National
Highway 37 (Imphal -Jiribarn} while Irang Bailey Bridge
has been swept away by the
swift current of Irang river
on Tuesday.
The National Highway-37
has been severed in two areas leaving 218 goods vehicles coming from Jiribam
stranded.
On receipt of report of
damaged caused to the National Highway, NHIDCL has
started use of heavy machines
to restore connectivity.
According to All Manipur
Road Transport Drivers and
Motor Workers' Union secretary Maimon Anil Meitei,
218 goods carrying vehicles
are stranded along National
Highway 37 after the Irang
Bailey Bridge collapsed and
the road caved in at Kotlen.
While 114 vehicles coming
from Jiribam are stranded
at Shanti Khunou, 104 oil
tankers are in Noney.
Expressing hope that repair works by NHIDCL might
be completed by Wednesday
in case of favourable weather
condition, reconstruction of
Irang Bailey Bridge, however,
would be time consuming
exercising, Anil said.
Pointing out that construction of the RCC Irang
Bridge has been completed
but vehicles barred access
due to pending inauguration,
he urged government authorities to make the diversionary routes motorable to ensure uninterrupted supply of essentials.
