HERICOUN celebrates foundation day

Imphal, May 17 2022: Ethno Heritage Council (HERICOUN) Manipur celebrated its 20th foundation day at Wangkhei Angom Leikai community hall, Imphal East on Monday.

Manipur University of Culture vice-chancellor Paonam Gunindro and HERICOUN president Longjam Ratankumar attended the event as chief guest and president respectively while WASDEV president RK Tharaksana and LOUSAL president Mutum Churamani were the guests of honour.

Speaking on the occasion, Gunindro opined that people of Manipur no longer know the value of time and stressed the need to cultivate the habit of judicious use of time.

People seem to no longer understand own identity and this is a serious issue that needs to be addressed, he said.

There are over 7000 languages used across the world but less than 100 languages have their own scripts.

Manipuri language is one of those few languages, which have own scripts and it is a matter of pride for the Manipuris.

Besides, Manipur used to have its own currency and constitution but the society is regressing today due to disunity through a long course of history, he lamented while stressing on the need for unity and communal harmony to shine again.

In his address, CCSK president Jitendra Ningomba said that the Manipuri society is currently reeling under the impact of three major historical blunders.

Feud in the royal family and disunity among the people led to the occupation of the erstwhile kingdom by Awa and then the British, he pointed out, adding that differences in political ideology among the leaders led to forced merger into the Indian Union in 1949.These blunders should be the lessons for the people of the state, he said.

Jitendra also emphasised on the need for seeking special status for Manipur while asserting that the demand for political autonomy being pursued by COCOMI is a legitimate move that merits support of the people of the state.

He then announced that COCOMI will initiate a mass campaign in this regard.

HERICOUN presented its annual 'Tomthin Khudol' (award) to renowned Manipuri him director Romi Meetei on the occasion.
