World Breast-Feeding Week begins

Directorate of Health Services and State Health Society of National Health Mission (NHM), Manipur jointly launched the state-level observance of World Breast-Feeding Week 2024 at the conference hall of the Family Welfare Department on Thursday.
Presided over by NHM, Manipur state mission director Dr M Dinesh Singh, the observance was attended by Health Services director Dr O Sanahanbi Devi as chief guest and Social Welfare joint director Bunty Konthoujam and Family Welfare Services director Dr L Tomcha Khuman as guests of honour.
Delivering the key note address, NHM, Manipur state nodal officer (child health) Dr A Sylvia said that breastfeeding benefits both the baby and the mother as the breast milk strengthens the immune system of the baby, while helping the mother prevent breast cancer and ovarian cancer.
Stressing the need for spreading awareness about benefits of breastfeeding, she informed that awareness on how lactating mothers can breastfeed in a safe and supportive environment will be provided during the week-long observance.
She further emphasised the importance of breastfeeding babies less than six months without fail, while babies who are six months old and above can start consuming solid foods in addition to breast milk.
In her address, Health Services director Dr O Sanahanbi Devi appealed to all to extend their support in ensuring the success of the weeklong observance.
