Bishnupur, November 16 2024:
Farmers harvesting paddy crops at Irengbam under Bishnupur district faced an unprovoked assault by suspected "armed miscreants" who opened fire at approximately 11:30 am from Aigejang village today.
The sporadic firing endangered the lives of the farmers and appeared aimed at disrupting the harvesting activity, said a press note issued by IGAR (S) .
Responding swiftly, troops of Assam Rifles stationed at Irengbam returned fire, forcing the attackers to retreat.
The troops also proceeded to pursue the fleeing "armed miscreants".
During the chase, they discovered a camp likely used to stage such attacks.
The camp was abandoned hastily upon the arrival of Assam Rifles personnel.
Numerous administrative supplies, rations and bunkers were found at the site, which were subsequently destroyed in the presence of Kangpokpi police.
Assam Rifles prevented potential casualties and its swift response brought reassurance and calm to an otherwise volatile situation.
