Imphal, May 26 2025:
World Meetei Council (WMC) Manipur Unit organised its Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Ima Panthoibee Shanglen, Lamjao Mayai Leikai in Kakching district today.
According to a press release issued by K Muhen, general secretary, WMC Manipur Unit, the AGM was held from 1 pm to 4 pm with Urikkhinbam Kunjo Singh, president, WMC Manipur Unit as the functional president and Sapamcha Jadumani, president, Federation of Haomee as the chief guest.
Two main topics were discussed during the meeting, namely, the ongoing conflict and what role people should take in this regard.
Manipur University Professor Kangujam Yugindro spoke about "The Manipur Hills Areas (Acquisition of Chiefs' Rights) Act 1967" discussing how the chieftainship system exists only in Manipur.
He questioned how the hereditary chieftainship continues to exist in Manipur though the Manipur Hills Areas (Acquisition of Chiefs' Rights) Act 1967 was passed.
The discussion deliberated on how to ensure that the Act becomes operational swiftly.
The gathering also resolved to mount pressure on the Government to send the ethnography and latest socio-economic report to the Centre for the inclusion of the Meetei community in ST list.
