30th RIMS Firing Victims Memorial Day observed

Commemorating the death of nine people in firing by CRPF personnel at RIMS gate in 1995, RIMS Firing Victims Memorial Day Observation Committee commemorate the 30th RIMS Firing Victims Memorial Day at RIMS Firing Victims Memorial Square on Tuesday.
The observance began with offering of floral tribute to the victims led by RIMS former medical superintendent Dr Y Mohen followed by a one-minute silence as a mark of respect to the victims.
Speaking at the event Dr Y Mohen described the firing incident by CRPF personnel at the RIMS campus as a massacre, during which a medical student and eight civilians were killed.
He said that such tragic events should never occur again.
Moirangthem Subashchandra, a member of the RIMS Firing Victims Memorial Trust, who was also present at the event, recalled and condemned the incident.
He highlighted that the victims included one medical student, six auto-rickshaw drivers, a rickshaw puller and a caretaker of the RIMS Sulabh Toilet.
He also condemned the re-imposition of the Armed Forces' Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in the state and called on the authorities to repeal it as soon as possible.
The event was attended by Progressive Youth Organisation president advocate Kh Tarunkumar Singh, Uripok Poirei Apunba Lup advisor Kangjam Bhuben Meitei and Lalambung Takhellambam Leikai Meira Paibi Lup secretary Ningthoujam Thaibemma Devi.
