Kakching, June 19 2024:
Renovation of the road stretch from Hiyanglam Wabagai Lamkhai Keithel to Sugnu is underway under the "private funding" of Hiyanglam MLA Dr Yumnam Radheshyam.
The MLA flagged off the renovation project of the road on Wednesday at Hiyanglam Wabagai Lamkhai KeitheLin the presence of PWD, Kakching Division executive engineer Y Lenin, assistant engineer T Bishworjit and SO Ataur Rahman.
In his brief address, MLA Radheshyam noted that the road, popularly known as Burma-Sugnu road is in bad shape as the last renovation work was carried out about 15 years ago.
He himself, as well as local clubs, Meira Paibi groups and CSOs had pressed the government multiple times to repair the same and also placed the matter in the state assembly but without any positive response from the government till date.
However, as the road project would require central funding considering its length, the state government sent a proposal to the Union government for a double-lane road project, for which a survey had already been completed but the central government is yet to sanction the project.
Even though the state government is in the process of seeking funding from different central sources for development of the road, condition of the road has deteriorated day by day posing threat to human lives.
Considering the situation, he took up the initiative of funding the road project from his own source after consulting the minister concerned, explained the MLA.
He also informed that under the project, the worst affected portions would be blacktopped from scratch and less affected parts would be mended.
Potholes were also mended about a couple of years ago but that did not last long, he said and expressed doubts that the work he is funding now might not last long.
Dr Radheshyam said he is simply taking up the initiative to make the road accessible for the time being before the Central government sanctions the road project.
On the other hand, the MLA inaugurated a market shed constructed under his local area development fund at Langmeidong Maning Awang Leikai
on Wednesday.
