Noney, August 08 2024:
Affected Landowners Committee (CALA), Longmai on Thursday announced an indefinite bandh along the NH-37 (Imphal-Jiribam road) and a halt to all national project works within the jurisdiction of Longmai, Noney district headquarters, from midnight of July 9.The affected landowners called the indefinite bandh due to the authority's failure to pay compensation for road expansion work along the NH-37.The affected landowners claimed that they are the rightful landowners and not encroach-ers, explaining that "our cries for justice were not heard by the people who should listen and soothe us.
So, we have become restless and have decided to take up a very strong and resolute form of agitation by shutting down indefinitely the national highway-37 and all the national project works within the jurisdiction of Noney district headquarter, from midnight of August 9, 2024".They added that the competent authority was given a stipulated period to resolve the problem but it failed to consider the landowners' demand seriously.
While demanding immediate payment of their rightful compensation, 45 affected landowners had warned the NHIDCL and the state government of launching intense agitation after August 5, 2024, if the authorities were reluctant to pay the compensation amount estimated by the deputy commissioner of Noney district on January 30, 2023.A joint assessment was conducted by a team of sub-divisional officer, divisional forest officer, executive engineer (PWD), district officer (H&SC) of Noney district, and representatives from NHIDCL under the speaking order of Joseph Pauline, the then deputy commissioner of Noney district, on October 4, 2022 .
