Driven out CCpur Medical College students draw attention of Govt

Imphal, August 08 2024: Raising several demands, displaced students of Churachandpur Medical College (Imphal campus) staged a sit-in protest at Kyamgei today.

Some of the demands which the displaced medical students raised were a proper campus to pursue their studies, provide hostel accommodation facilities and appoint regular faculties among others.

Discard the idea of running a college through a guest lecturer, the students also said. The protest demonstration was organised by Churachandpur Medical College Students' Union.

Placards with inscription, "We are not satisfied with Health Minister's response", "Medical education should not be politicised", "The system has failed us", "Only assurance no implementation", "Shall we come back here and protest again next year" were displayed by the students during the protest.

Speaking to the media, Moirangthem Deepak, a second year displaced student, said that altogether 183 students of Churachandpur Medical College have been displaced due to the unrest in Manipur which has been going on since May 3, 2023 .

Saying that these medical students in Imphal campus could not pursue their studies on par with their friends due to shortage of staff and infrastructure, he appealed to the Government to address their grievances and protect their future.

Continuing that the Imphal campus of Churachandpur Medical College doesn't have adequate classrooms, hostel facilities, Deepak added that going for clinical duty in Thoubal and Bishnupur is problematic to them due to transportation factors.

The Covid Hospital at Kyamgei was also picked up for the medical students to pursue clinical studies and research but the hospital doesn't have any patients, Deepak said.

Maintaining that the Imphal campus of the medical college is seemingly run by teachers and guest lecturers, he further appealed to the Government to recruit regular faculties of the medical college and fulfil their other demands within this month (August) .
