Imphal, January 24 2025:
A public discourse on the topic "Women's Role in Today's Society" was organised by Apunba Nupi Lup, Kshetrigao AC at Naharup Makhapat community hall on Friday.
Speaking orf the occasion, DM College of Arts former principal Dr Ch Shreelaramani highlighted the significant role women play in Manipuri society.
However, she pointed out that men are often the ones making decisions, even when the issue concerns women, consequently resulting in problems when decisions solely affecting women are being made.
She expressed regret over the public humiliation and shaming of women under the garb of punishment for wrongdoing.
While acknowledging that actions should be taken against women for immoral conduct, Dr Shreelaramani said that certain rules must be followed when conducting inquiries or investigations involving women.
She said that, even if a woman has engaged in immoral activities, it is inappropriate for men to interrogate or investigate her.
She also expressed discontentment with the practice of males conducting interrogations of women, violating established rules and laws, and using inappropriate language during these procedures.
She argued that when a woman is to be interrogated, it should be done by a female police officer, not a male one.
Dr Shreelaramani also pointed out that absence of source of stable income often leads individuals to engage in immoral activities in search of easy money, which in turn contributes to various crimes in the society.
She stressed the importance of always having a legitimate profession to prevent such behaviour.
