MMTU meets NCST member, presses for ST status

Imphal, September 21 2024:
As a part of its campaign for inclusion of Meetei/Meitei in Scheduled Tribe list, members of Meetei (Meitei) Tribe Union (MMTU) led by its leader Mutum Churamani met with National Commission for Scheduled Tribes member Nirupama Chakma and Akhil Bharat Hindu Maha Sabha national president Rashree Chaudhuri.
A release issued by MMTU informed that memorandum was also submitted to President, Prime Minister office, Ministry of Tribal Affairs and Registrar General census.
During the meeting with Nirupama, she expressed that the demand of Meetei for inclusion in ST list is legitimate and added that Meetei is a community that should be included in ST list.
Regarding the contentions among different communities in North Eastern region, she stressed the need for dialogues to bring peace: Rashree Chaudhuri also mentioned that non-inclusion of Meetei in the ST list is injustice towards the community as Meetei needs constitutional protection.
While in Delhi, the delegation of MMTU will also meet religious leaders and social activists as a part of the campaign for inclusion of Meetei/Meitei in the ST list, it added.
