Imphal, May 28 2024:
The heavy rains that
lashed the state Tuesday led
to rapid rise in the water
level of Imphal river as residents fear breach of the river bank at Singjamei Makha
Khongnang Pheidekpi
under Langthabal assembly constituency where a
retaining wall constructed
near the UJB School has
been left midway for a long
period of time.
The work of the said
half-finished retaining
wall after being stalled for
almost eight months had
started on May 20 .
The contractor concerned restarted construction but is far from being complete.
Consequently, heavy
rainfall since Tuesday
morning have made the
river bank at the said portion vulnerable to collapse/
breach as the water level
of Imphal river continues
to rise and is flowing at the
same height as the retaining wall by evening.
The contractor brought
heavy machines to
strengthen the embankment using earth with the
work continuing till late
night.
However, as the soil
is newly set, it is loose and
most likely to be washed
away.
As such, locals have
urged Water Resource Department to look into the
matter earnestly before any
catastrophe is caused by it .
