Farmers demand repairing of canal syphon

Informing that a damaged syphon of the Samaram irrigation canal has resulted in water leakage and consequent failure irrigation network in areas fed by the canal, farmers of Samaram, Chingtham and Tentha area have drawn attention of the government for immediate repairing of the damaged syphon.
Interacting with the media on Wednesday, Khongjom Ideal Club spokesperson Mutum Shanta, said that they had raised several complaints to the water resources department for repairing the part, as the damaged syphon has diverted wafer of the Samaram canal to Wangbal-L.ousi canal depriving irrigation water to the agricultural lands in Samaram, Chingtham, Khongjom and Tentha areas.
The syphon was constructed last year but got damaged affecting around 1000 hectares of farmland, he'said while charging the department of undermining their suffering.
Expressing concern over the negligence of the department concerned and the inconvenience faced by the farmers, Mutum Shanta cautioned that the farmers have resolved to destroy the syphon to ensure availability of irrigation water in the said areas, unless the department repairs it by Friday.
They also resolved to ban all the ongoing projects of the department along Wangbal-Lousi canal.
Khongjom area Meira Paibi leader Moirangthem Sorojini said that they have been pursuing the matter with the department since June 6 but there has been no positive response till date.
