Imphal, June 01 2025:
Questioning the rationale for Labour Department's failure to enforce various labour laws in the state, All Manipur Trade Unions' Council (AMTUC) has derided the Department for negligence in the implementation of Employees' State Insurance (ESI) Scheme, under the Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC).
As per a release by AMTUC, labourers are peeved with the Labour Department's failure to provide benefits of ESIC Act, 1948, which has been implemented nationwide since 1948, to workers of the state.
Stating that absence of nodal officer enforcement officer for the ESI scheme is testament to the department's callousness, and enquiring on no noticeable development in the implementation of the mandatory Act in the state, the trade union noted that Manipur is last among the North East states in enrolment of workers as insured person (IP) to provide social security under ESIC, which can be entirely blamed on Labour Department and state nodal officer concerned.
AMTUC revealed that in a meeting organised by ESIC Regional Office North East Region on July 16, 2024, AMTUC general secretary A Premkumar Singh and joint secretary Koijam Tomba Singh had requested the ESIC director general to conduct a survey in the state.
Subsequently, an ESIC four-member team of Mukesh Kumar, Sanchan Ghosh, Subrata Das and Kuntal Pal began a two-week survey from May 26 onwards for the first time in two districts of Imphal West and Imphal East.
But, there has been no positive response from Labour Department and ESIC state nodal officer regarding the issue, which the workers of the state will not take lightly at all, it cautioned.
