Imphal, November 15 2024:
Citing rapid deterioration of Keirao Makting Road and Keirao Kairanpalli Road (also known as MU Road); local clubs, CSOs and meira paibi groups in Keirao have announced prohibition on operation of trucks carrying earth, stones and sands from Sunday.
Addressing media persons after a public meeting held at ARDO ground, Keirao attended by representatives of Keirao Youth Development Organisation (KYDO) Keirao, Jametul Ulema Keirao, Keirao Makting Rural Women's Development Association and All Round Development Organisation (ARDO), KYDO secretary Jiaur Rahaman expressed concern over the road's worsening condition.
He stated that the MU Road, which is vital to the local community, has been neglected by the relevant authorities, including the local MLA, for the past seven years.
Rahaman pointed out that, despite the state government's ban on sand mining in the hills, certain individuals have been illegally excavating earth, stones and sand from Keirao Langdum and using the MU Road.
These activities are driven by personal profit and have contributed significantly to the further destruction of the road.
He also criticised the authorities for their inaction and called out the silence of local clubs and meira paibi groups, who, he said, have failed to address the issue.
He added that, despite endorsements from various CSOs opposing such illegal quarrying, some individuals continue these illegal operations, with up to 50-100 trips per day.
The lack of intervention from local authorities and organisations has only worsened the condition, Rahaman added.
