State observes Fire Service Day

The 'Fire Service Day' observance organised by Manipur Fire Service department under the theme "Ensure Fore Safety, Contribute Towards Nation Building" was held at its Imphal headquarters on Sunday with offering of floral tributes at the Martyr Pillar as a mark of respect to the firemen Who have lost their lives in the line of duty being the highlight of the solemn calendar event.
Speaking on the occasion, Manipur Fire Service director Laishram Nabachandra informed that apart from Fire Service Day held on April 14 throughout the country, Fire Service Week is observed from April 14 to 20 to promote a fire-safe environment through several events and educational programmes.
Highlighting the significance of the day, the director said that National Fire Service (NFS) Day.
is observed in honour of the 66 officers and firemen who lost their lives in a ship explosion at the Mumbai dockyard in 1944.He further informed that in year 2023, the fire service department encountered 743 fire incidents, and saved eight lives from and properties worth Rs 1266 crore.
In addition, the department also conducted fire audit in altogether 327 sectors including hospitals, offices, educational institutions, hotels, oil pumps and depots and assembly building and installed fire protective systems.
The department also conducted awareness and fire safety drills to 17,364 people in the same year.
Stating that the state presently has total of 19 fire stations with the opening of new sub-stations at Nambol and Loitang Khunou last year, Nabachandra said that the department is also planning to set up new fire sub-stations along with purchasing modern fire fighting vehicle and equipment in year 2024-25 from the funding of the 13th Finance Commission.
Moreover, the department has also started process for recruitment of 179 different posts, he revealed.
The director further mentioned that the department does not exist solely for saving lives and properties from fire accidents but to extend help to the public in emergency situation such as motor accidents, drowning, floods, building collapse, earthquakes, etc.
He also stated that in acknowledgement of the selfless act by personnel of the fire service department, senior firemen Aheibam Tombisana and Mutum Priyokumar have been enlisted among the recipients of DG-SF, CD and HG Commendation Certificate provided by the Director General of Fire Service, Civil Defence and Home Guard under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The director also said that L Manihar Sharma, Serto Alin Kom, Pashel Bekan Anal, Md Gulbas Khan and W Landon Singh have been selected for the "Best Fire Fighter of the Year Award-2024".The five were presented with the said award as a part of the commemorative event, also attended by commissioner (Home) Gyan Prakash, Manipur Fire Service former director N Noren, senior finance officer Kh Samson and Raj Medicity managing director Haobijam Rajen.
