Imphal, May 26 2025:
National Institute of Technology (NIT), Manipur on Monday organised the inaugural ceremony of "A Campaign in support of Nation First" at its conference hall in Imphal.
The ceremony was graced by Bajrang Lal Bagra, Chairman, BOG, NIT Manipur; Dr Palin Khundongbam, MD, Shija Hospitals & Research Institute (SHRI); and Prof Kh Manglem Singh, Director (i/c), NIT Manipur as presidium members.
The ceremony began with the lighting of the lamp followed by the opening song, "Vande Mataram".
Speaking on the occasion, Bajrang Lal said, "The narrative that arrival of Western powers brought changes to India that led to its development is a simplification of a complex history".
"While some positive developments occurred, such as the introduction of modem education and infrastructure, these were often accompanied by exploitation, oppression, and economic damage", he added.
He continued that before the British arrived, India's contribution to the global economy is estimated to have been around 25-35%, based on estimates of India's GDP between the 1st and 17th centuries.
"India's share of the global economy significantly decreased after British rule, dropping to around 2-3% by the time of independence in 1947", he added.
He pointed out that the lack of political unity among Indian states was a crucial factor that allowed the British to establish and maintain colonial rule in India.
"National unity is essential for India's progress as it fosters a sense of shared identity, purpose, and cooperation among its diverse population, leading to social harmony and economic growth", said Bajrang Lal while adding that this unity also strengthens the Nation's ability to withstand external pressures and internal conflicts, contributing to overall national security and stability.
