Mani bats for judicial probe into Gwaltabi incident

Senior advocate Khaidem Mani has said that the insistence by personnel of Mahar Regiment for concealing Manipur from the government-owned Manipur State Transport (MST) bus at Gwaltabi is not trivial issue but merits institution of a judicial enquiry to probe the incident.
Strongly condemning the attitude and act of the Mahar Regiment stopping the MST bus carrying media persons to cover the opening ceremony of the Shirui Lily festival on May 20 at Gwaltabi, Khaidem Mani said the outrageous action of the army unit was not only illegal but also had mala-fide intention.
It was not merely harassment of media persons but challenge to integrity and identity of Manipur and complete dishonour of people of the state.

The state being under President's Rule, the Governor should be accountable for such act and tender apology to the people for the incident.
Necessary legal action should also be initiated against the chief secretary, security advisor and DGP, he told media persons at his residence on Sunday.
Noting that an enquiry committee has been formed to probe the Gwaltabi incident, Mani called as questionable as to how the two officers of the committee could question officers ranked above them.

desired results, it is essential to probe the incident through judicial enquiry, he said and stressed the need for those in legal profession and bar associations to shoulder more responsibility in the constitution of a judicial enquiry to probe the Gwaltabi incident.
