Wildlife committee foils electrofishing at Patsoi

Thoubal, June 07 2025: An unidentified individual was stopped from electrofishing at a water body to the east of Patsoi police outpost by a team of Joint Co-ordination Committee on Wildlife and Biodiversity (JCCWB) today.

The JCCWB team rushed to the spot after being informed about an individual using an electrofishing machine to catch fish.

Upon reaching the area, the person in question fled while leaving behind his fishing equipment.

Speaking in this connection, Romesh Ningthoujam, convenor, JCCWB, shared that electrofishing has been prohibited not only because it affects small aquatic life forms but damages the ecosystem and threatens the ecological balance.

He cautioned that violators can be jailed under section 12 of the Manipur Fisheries Act, 1988 and other relevant acts.
