Culprits don't deserve any mercy: COCOMI unit

Imphal, July 20 2023: Strongly condemning the heinous act of two women paraded naked, women's wing of Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) stated that such acts should neither be committed on any woman nor the perpetrators let off lightly.

Addressing a press meet at its new office at Lamphel on Thursday, COCOMI women's wing executive member RK Tharaksana said that the viral video of naked parading of two women has now become national and international news.

The COCOMI 'mothers' strongly condemn such barbarous acts on women, she stated, and asserted that the culprits should not be pardoned under any circumstance.

She continued that the Meitei society respects and places women at the highest level.

If the video had been broadcast by the national media before it went viral, the culprits could have been taught a lesson much earlier.

However, the opportunity has been provided belatedly.

Nonetheless, the womenfolk will not spare any of the culprits and work to ensure they are punished suitably.

The government should apprehend and punish the culprits involved at the earliest and prevent a repeat of similar incidents in the future, she urged.

Tharaksana further said that since the clashes began on May 3, many have died and many more left injured.

Many have lost their families, homes and forced to take refuge in safer locations.

PM Modi, who had remained silent till now, finally spoke some sentences after the viral video.

But he should do more as a leader of the people and ensure such violent incidents do not recur in the future.

The mothers, however, will not tolerate any form of violence against women by unruly people, she conveyed.

COCOMI advisor and Kan-gla Mei president Y Leiriklei-ma also remarked that if the viral video had been placed in the parliament session beforehand, the mothers of Manipur would have been able to punish the inhuman culprits regardless of the community they belong to.

Although it is appreciated that PM Modi commented on the matter, his prolonged silence since the May 3 clashes is condemnable.

It is frustrating to witness PM's act of ignoring.

Manipur, as if it's not part of India.

In addition, the government seems to be in support of those supporting the agenda to break India apart instead of protecting the Meiteis who are against this agenda.

Nonetheless, the people will never tolerate an outsider becoming the lord of this land, she stated.

Leirikleima continued that the union home minister, after his visit to the state amid the violence, is also maintaining silence.

She then urged PM to stop the fire from engulfing the entirety of Manipur, while informing the world of the ongoing violence in the state.

One should stop thinking of driving away the indigenous populace and annihilate the Meitei, while supporting the Chin-Kukis from outside, she remarked.
