Imphal, July 28 2024:
Residents of Mandop Yumpham relief camp and Sardar Patel relief camp on Sunday staged sit-in demonstration at Mandop Yumpham demanding provisions for government jobs to families of the internally displaced persons (IDPs) .
The protestors held placards with messages such as "Return us home at the earliest", "Long live Manipur", "One Family, One Job for IDPs" and "End the crisis that has plagued the state for over a year" .
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines, one Mayanglambam Mercy from Senjam Chirang Maning Leikai, currently staying at the Mandop Yumpham relief camp, questioned why the government is negotiating compensation for properties damaged during the ethnic violence when it collects every penny in income tax from citizens.
She stated that the compensation provided by the government is not acceptable at all.
She further reminded that it is the government's duty to assess all houses and properties damaged in the ethnic violence.
However, she expressed her disappointment that the government has decided to pay immediate relief only for the properties that have been assessed, leaving the unassessed ones without compensation.
