Ukhrul, July 07 2025:
Victims of a KCC loan fraud, from various villages of Ukhrul and Kamjong districts, have urged the district administration, for initiating legal actions against a local man for exploiting poor farmers in the name of false promises of KCC loan.
One Somi Awungshi, son of late Pangai Awungshi, from Tangkhul Hundung Khullen village, Kamjong district, is accused of collecting Electoral Identity cards from victims to perpetrate a scam involving fraud, identity theft, and misrepresentation under the guise of facilitating government schemes for impoverished farmers.
On Monday, hundreds of victims marched through the town, starting from the town hall and proceeding to the district Mini-secretariat, where they submitted a formal complaint to the district administration and Ukhrul superintendent of police (SP).
During a media briefing, a victim Jairus Gachui from Lunghar village explained that 10 years ago, Somi Awungshi collected photocopies of Electoral Identity Cards from farmers, claiming he would help them access government and beneficiary schemes.
However, the victims recently discovered that they had bank accounts with IDBI and Canara Bank linked to loans they were unaware of, as they received legal notices from the banks regarding defaulted loans.
He alleged that Somi Awungshi had fraudulently withdrawn the funds from the KCC loan beneficiaries' accounts through the KAK-SUS Society without their knowledge and consent.
Another victim, Sword Mahung from Lungphu village, disclosed that a loan originally amounting to Rs 50,000 has now ballooned to over Rs 1,50,000 in debt on the beneficiaries' accounts.
He recounted that copies of their Electoral ID cards were gathered in 2013 to facilitate access to government benefits.
However, they were never informed of the loan process, and the victims only learned about their loan statuses after receiving legal notices from the banks.
The aggrieved victims urged the district administration to take appropriate legal measures against Somi Awungshi, for these fraudulent transactions that have exploited vulnerable farmers.
At the same time, the victims sought assistance from relevant authorities to register an FIR regarding the matter at the earliest.
