Punshi Keithel vendors seek vending spaces

Imphal, May 28 2024:
Expressing disappointment over the statement of Imphal Municipal
Corporation (IMC) regarding the Punshi Keithel issue,
women vendors of Punshi
Keithel have demanded vending spaces at the
newly constructed market
in the erstwhile campus of
Tombisana High School, as
per the gazette notification.
Addressing media
persons at Manipur Press
Club, here, on Tuesday,
Punshi Keithel Women Vendors' Association
general secretary Tayenjam
Rita contended that as
per a gazette notification,
women vendors of Punshi
Keithel were to be provided vending space at the
newly constructed market
at Tombisana High School,
which is recognised as the
fourth women's market in Imphal.
However, Imphal Municipal Corporation
(IMC) stated that the Punshi
Keithel women vendors are
not recognised by the corporation and thus they are
considered unauthorised.
This stance is particularly
unfortunate given the fact that the Manipur High
Court had issued an order
directing authorities concerned to arrange vending
slots for these vendors.
Rita also mentioned
that the Punshi Keithel
women vendors have been
plying their wares in the
200 vending sheds set up
over the slab-covered Naga
Nullah, following a gazette
notification issued by the
Town Planning Department
on June 8, 2001 .
Therefore authorities concerned should provide vending spaces to the Punshi Keithel women vendors at the Tombisana High School market to ensure their rights are upheld.
