Police-media seminar: Better co-operation mooted to serve public interest

A one-day police-media seminar cum workshop was held today at 1st MR banquet hall under the joint aegis of Manipur Police Department and AMWJU.
The inaugural session of the function was graced by Chief Minister O Ibobi as chief guest, Law Minister Th Debendra as president and AMWJU president Wangkhemcha Shyamjai as guest of honour.
Giving the key-note address of the seminar, IGP (L&O-I) L Kailun highlighted the need for mutual trust and smooth coordination between police and media.

If the two can work together, fuller and better information can be disseminated to the public, Kailun said.
Chief Minister O Ibobi slammed the culture of burning down houses and vandalising household properties in the name of mob justice.
Crime against women has been rising sharply in Manipur and this disturbing trend affects the society as a whole.

He also hailed the initiative of organising such a seminar where police and media can jointly discuss some major issues like mob justice, crime against women, smuggling of psychotropic substances etc.
Th Debendra underscored the importance of stepping up police training and increasing the number of police stations in order to enable police work more efficiently.
People who commit crimes in Manipuri society are not the common man.
For this very reason, police need to work with greater seriousness.
AMWJU president Wangkhemcha Shyamjai said that people working in media still constitute the most deprived lot although every acknowledge the huge responsibility of media.
Majority of the media persons get a trifling Rs 2500 as their monthly salary.
It is worth analysing how media persons can work with greater responsibility given the peanuts they get as monthly salary.
Saying that a retired media person get Rs 2000 as monthly pension and his wife gets Rs 1000 if the retired media person expires, Shyamjai appealed to the State Government to raise the pension amount of retired media persons to Rs 5000 per month.
The technical section of the seminar which was attended by police officers, civil society leaders, NGOs and journalists was divided into four sections.
