Imphal, July 27 2023: The State Government is considering convening a special session of the State Assembly given the violence in Manipur, in the second or third week of August, said Health & IPR Minister Dr Sapam Ranjan Singh today.

Dr Ranjan who is the spokesman of the Government further said that the date of the session will be announced shortly after convening a Cabinet meeting.

The Minister, however, didn't disclose other details of the Assembly session other than assuring that it would be called in the second or third week of the next month.

Addressing reporters at DIPR Hall at Nityaipat Chuthek today, Dr Ranjan recalled how Thanlon AC MLA Vungzagin Valte was attacked by a mob in the initial stage of the conflict (May 4) and the measures being taken up by the Government to ensure his recuperation.

The Minister said that the Government is in constant touch with the authorities of the hospital where Vungzagin is admitted and his family members to know the health status of the MLA.

Some National media channels have unfortunately accused the Manipur Government of giving the cold shoulder to the injured MLA, Dr Ranjan said.

Saying that the Government condemns the mob attack on Vungzagin Valte and all forms of violence in the strongest terms, Dr Ranjan reiterated that they have been in constant touch with the family members of the Thanlon MLA after he was attacked.

Claiming that the ethnic-strife in Manipur started from Churachandpur side on May 3, the Minister continued that a meeting of MLAs and Ministers was convened under the supervision of Chief Minister N Biren Singh the following day (May 4) to control the violence.

Vungzagin Valte also took part in the meeting, he added.

As the violence intensified, the Chief Minister advised all the Ministers and MLAs to stay at their quarters, the Minister maintained and added that he himself also asked the Thanlon AC MLA to venture outside only after due security measures were taken up.

Claiming that Vungzagin Valte however went out on his own after assuring them nothing bad will happen, Dr Ranjan said that they received the information of the Thanlon MLA being attacked shortly after he went out.

After the mob attack, the Government, as per the advise of the Chief Minister, contacted a particular hospital to give maximum care to the injured MLA and to update them (the Government) of his status frequently, he conveyed and added that Vungzagin was later shifted to Apollo Hospital in Delhi after the Government called an air ambulance.

He further said that many Ministers rushed to the Bir Tikendrajit Airport to meet the family members of Vungzagin Valte.

Saying that a special doctor of RIMS accompanied the Thanlon MLA in the flight to Delhi, Dr Ranjan added they took health reports from the authority of Apollo Hospital and the spouse of the injured MLA twice or thrice every single day during the treatment.

Expressing deep dissatisfaction over some National media channels accusing the Manipur Government of completely ignoring the Thanlon MLA, Dr Ranjan asked all the media houses to verify before publishing any news item.

Some have even claimed that the Thanlon MLA was given electric shock which is not mentioned in any of the medical reports, he said and refuted the allegation.

He (Vungzagin Valte) was beaten brutally and that is the case mentioned in the medical report.

Dr Ranjan clarified.

Saying that Education Minister Th Basanta Kumar and BJP State unit president A Sarda Devi visited the Thanlon MLA at Apollo Hospital, Dr Ranjan continued that the Government also gave financial assistance for his treatment.

The Manipur Government condemns all these lies and fabricated narrations which accuse them (the Government) of giving the cold shoulder to Vungzagin Valte, he added.

Praying for the Thanlon MLA to recuperate soon so as to serve the people again, Dr Ranjan assured that Vungzagin Valte will get all the privileges of being an MLA from the State Assembly.
