Imphal, June 27 2015 : A large number of women staged a sit-in-protest against the brutal murder of KA Shanti at Ramrei village in Ukhrul district today.

Womenfolk from Riha, New Cannon, Ramrei, Mayo-pung, Wungnur and Marung- phun villages took part in the protest in addition to leaders of Naga Shanao Long, Yai-nganpokpi area, Tangkhul Naga Village Foothill Organisation and the village chief of Ramrei village.

Speaking to reporters, JAC secretary Themson Jajo, said that KA Shanti was found murdered inside a jungle near her house on June 24 after she went missing for two days.

He said that they have formed a JAC in connection with the murder.

Although they went to Imphal to meet the Chief Minister and submit a memorandum highlighting their demands yesterday, they did not get an appointment.

However, they met the Deputy Chief Minister, who also holds Home portfolio at around 7 pm, he added.

The JAC through their memorandum demanded the Government to book the culprit immediately and award befitting punishment to him according to the law of the land, provide adequate ex-gratia to the victim's family and monthly monetary assistance till Shanti's children attain 21 years.

The memorandum also mentioned that they would not claim Shanti's body until these demands are fulfilled, Themson Jajo said.

With supports from other civil society organisations, he said, they would initiate intense agitations if these demands are not fulfilled by June 28 noon.

Ramrei village headman Shimthar said that such incident occurred in the village for the first time.

Claiming that the crime was not committed by any of his villagers, Shimthar said that it was a handy work of an outsider, who is known to most of his villagers.

Saying that the prime suspect of the crime is now already in the police net, Shimthar said that it is however unfortunate that no clue has been developed by police so far.

Naga Shanao Long, Yainganpokpi area president YS said that the culprit should be awarded capital punishment for committing such an inhuman crime against an innocent woman while appealing to the authority concerned to take up stringent measures to check such incidents.

Tangkhul Naga Village Foothill Organisation president TS Tharmi said that the Government must be responsible for any eventuality as the prime suspect belongs to another community.

He said that they are not happy with the alleged discriminatory attitude of the Chief Minister as he has not given appointment to JAC members for a meeting although they have been waiting for his response since the past three days.

He said that three children of the deceased are presently staying with their step-mother.
