Assam varsity organises NE Educator's Conclave

Imphal, May 26 2025: Assam Down Town University organised a 'Edu ELEVATE: Northeast Educator's Conclave, Manipur Chapter' on the topic 'Implementation of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in North East states with special reference to Manipur' for school to university level teachers at Classic Grande, Chingmeirong on Monday.

Presiding over the function, Assam Down Town University science faculty Prof Rajeev Sarmah said that NEP 2020 focuses on holistic education, traditional knowledge system, arts and humanities, multilingual education, vocational education, teachers' training and professional development, skill development strategic assessment, evaluation system, etc.

Regarding the education landscape of the state, he said that as per the 2011 census, the literacy rate is around 76.9 per cent.

At present, there are 4617 schools, 34 government colleges, 17 aided colleges, 50 private colleges, three central universities and three state universities.

NEP will help in promoting the linguistic diversity of the North Eastern region, bridge remote learning gap, curriculum flexibility, integration of indigenous knowledge system, preservation of traditional knowledge, and introduction of vocational education suitable for economic activities in the state, thereby helping students to attain skills for future employment.

However, there are challenges to the implementation of the policy such as proper infrastructure, curriculum adaption, etc.

Instead of ignoring these challenges, there is a need to face the same head on, he stressed.

Rajeev Sarmah continued that for NEP to be successfully implemented in the NE region there is need to localisation of regional context and other aspects as mentioned above.

He then emphasised the importance of technology in bringing positive changes the education sector of the region and as such called for providing technological support and other schemes so as to make education inclusive and equitable.
