NFSA triggers complaints galore

Imphal, August 18 2016: Complaints on National Food Security Act (NFSA) are pouring into the office of The Sangai Express after the daily launched a campaign to streamline the implementation of the Act.

The food Act was launched in the State in April this year.

N Yaiskul of Hiyanglam Hiranmei said that Thoubal DC issued an order stating that all the duplicate ration cards must be surrendered by August 22 and these cards would be invali- dated after verification.

He further said that the order also stated that those benefi- ciaries who have not received ration cards must complain to the District Supply Officer by August 31. However in reality, most beneficiaries have not received any type of card from the authority concerned and they do not know who is withholding these cards, Yaiskul said.

Saying that people want to know where all the ration cards of Thoubal district have gone, he questioned how the benefi- ciaries, who possess duplicate ration cards, would be identified if the valid/genuine ration cards are not distributed to the public at all.

People may be constrained to seek information through RTI to trace their ration cards, Yaiskul said.

Meanwhile, CPI Imphal East District Council organised a public meeting on the NFSA mess today.

CPI Imphal East District Council secretary H Ibohal while speaking at the meeting urged the DC to take up necessary measures to ensure fair and impartial distribution of ration cards and rice to the beneficiaries.

He said that people have been reeling under hardships as the State Government has not put into effect any measure to check price rise.

Ibohal said that in Imphal district, there is no consistency in the quantity of rice distributed to the public.

Although, an AAY household is entitled to receive 35 kg of rice per month and 5 kg each per beneficiary per month under NFSA, some households are receiving only 5 kg while others are getting 6 kg or 16 kg, Ibohal said.

Stating that it is a must to increase the number of Fair Price Shop agents he also urged the concerned not to politicise the noble Act.
