Imphal, June 01 2025:
Out of the five shutters of Ithai Barrage which is a part of Loktak Hydroelectric Project, four have been opened but one could not be opened due to technical reasons.
The gate conked out from the day Manipur started experiencing nonstop downpour.
Steel plates of all the five shutters were replaced with new ones and the shutters were repaired recently.
While four shutters are operational, repairing work of the fifth shutter could not be completed, said a source.
Repairing the shutters involves welding.
As such, the repairing work was delayed due to rainfall, said the source.
However, efforts to contact responsible officers of NHPC drew a blank.
The water level of Ithai Barrage in the upstream was 768.800 m at 10 am today.
At 5.30 pm, the water level in the upstream was 769 m while it was 768.800 in the downstream.
Khuga River falls into Manipur River in the upstream of Ithai Barrage while Chakpi River drains into Manipur River in the downstream of the barrage.
With the water levels of both Khuga and Chakpi rivers rising continuously, the current of Manipur River may get impeded, added the source.
