Ukhrul, September 02 2023:
Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS), the Tangkhul student body of Ukhrul has demanded immediate restoration of internet services in Ukhrul district.
The internet services shut since May 3 has crippled businesses and digitally cut off the people of Ukhrul district, said Ramreichan Keishing, TKS president.
Speaking to the media, Ramreichan Keishing elaborated the problems and hardships being faced by the people due to internet ban in Ukhrul district.
The State Government, after May 3, imposed a total ban on internet services in Manipur.
The more than 120 days prolonged internet ban has affected the economy, education, and many other important sectors particularly in Ukhrul, Ramreichan said.
"We want the Government to immediately restore internet services in Manipur in general and Ukhrul district in particular.
The ban has affected the functioning of all sectors, including Government offices and educational institutions," Ramreichan added.
While it has paralysed and killed businesses, students including civil service aspirants are not able to access online resources, complete assignments, fill and submit forms necessary and mandatory for various examinations, said Ramreichan.
He added that the speed of the Wi-Fi services provided to Government offices is too slow and needs upgradation to ensure uninterrupted connection.
The Digital India campaign launched by the Government of India with the motto-"Power to Empower'" to bring about digital literacy, building of digital infrastructure, and digital delivery of services has failed in Manipur since the service has been banned since May 3, he said.
Ramreichan stressed that the Supreme Court of India, in 2015, had declared access to the internet as a Fundamental Right under Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution, which guarantees the freedom of speech and expression.
The TKS wants immediate restoration of internet services in Ukhrul district recognizing the challenges being faced by the people.
The lack of internet connectivity in Ukhrul has hindered people's access to essential services, information, and educational resources, Ramreichan said.
He appealed to the Government to swiftly upgrade existing servers, and lift the ban on cellular internet with immediate effect.
