Thoubal, September 02 2023:
Four unidentified gunmen targeted a goldsmith running shop from his Thoubal Achouba Keithel Makha residence under Thoubal police station around 6:30 pm on Saturday.
Informing the media about the incident, goldsmith Wangkhem Ranjit recounted that around 6:30 am, four masked persons showed up at his house, offering to sell 10 'sans' of gold.
Telling them that he didn't have the required amount, Ranjit tried to call his brother in-law for assistance.
However, the unidentified individuals snatched his phone, brandished a handgun, and demanded his own firearm.
They confined him to a room, accusing him of extortion, while pointing the gun menacingly and threatening Ranjit's wife who was in the kitchen.
The robbers proceeded to ransack the premises and dismantled the CCTV camera equipment before entering the bedroom and taking away Rs 8.5 lakh in cash and gold worth Rs 72 lakh, which belonged to him and his brother-in-law.
They hastily departed, taking with them his single barrel licensed gun and two mobile handsets.
The criminals arrived in three vehicles - a red Mahindra Thar, a grey Hyundai Creta, and a white Mahindra Bolero.
Thoubal police has initiated an investigation and registered a case.
Condemning the incident in the strongest terms, members of Meira Paibi of Thoubal Achouba Pakhangkhong Leirak organised a sit-in protest at Thoubal Keithel Makha Bamon Leirak.
Protesters strongly objected to the armed robbery targeting ordinary citizens and urged the police to thoroughly investigate and apprehend those responsible for the crime.
