Imphal, June 14 2024:
Asserting that the armed Kuki militants' audacity in attacking Meetei villages in Jiribam is due to security lapses and negligence on the part of authorities concerned, five student bodies namely KSA, DESAM, SUK, AIMS and another organisation have called for immediate removal of the DGP and the security advisor, holding them accountable for the present unrest situation in Jiribam district.
In a joint statement made available to the media, the student bodies said that the crisis in the state lingering since May 3 last year following attacks by armed Kuki militants on the Meetei community, has left people of different communities in a state of despair.
The state and the central governments have not been able to solve the crisis and restore peace and tranquillity in the state for such a long time.
Maintaining that the present crisis which is a divide and destroy policy allegedly schemed by the central government to destroy Manipur, has become increasingly evident, the joint statement said that the recent ambush on an advance security convoy of the chief minister by armed Kuki militants, ahead of his scheduled visit to Jiribam, clearly illustrated complete breakdown of law and order in Manipur.
This incident has raised serious concerns about safety of public when even the chief minister's security convoy could be targeted in such a brazen manner.
The statement further said that despite the chief minister instructing the DGP and the security advisor to take up necessary security measures in Jiribam following reports of large number of Kuki militants heading towards Jiribam, it is both disheartening and suspicious that no pre-emptive measure had been taken up clearly testifying sheer negligence on the part of the DGP and the security advisor.
Therefore, the DGP and the security advisor should be held responsible for the situation in Jiribam now and removed from their respective posts immediately.
It serves no purpose to keep them in their current position when are not performing their duties, they maintained.
The student bodies, while appealing to both the state and central governments to stop keeping the people of the state in darkness, said that the existence of buffer zones, red zone areas, and lines of control has clearly indicated that the state government is shaky and spineless.
Therefore, the chief minister of Manipur should translate his assurance of making the state a land governed by laws into action and show to the people of Manipur that his government is firm and can handle issues effectively.
They also appealed to the chief minister to clarify to the public whether or not the suspension of operation agreement signed between the Kuki armed outfits and the state and central governments has been terminated or extended on the sly.
