NESO to launch HRC movement

Imphal, April 13 2023: North East Students' Organisation (NESO) would be launching a movement across the northeast region demanding implementation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) as per cut off base years adopted by the respective states.

Announcing this in a press conference held at Keishamthong here on Thursday, NESO assistant secretary general Wangjam Sanatomba said that new office bearers of NESO for the term 2023 were elected during the 6th general council conference held in Tripura from November 22 to 26, 2022 .

Handing and taking over of charge of the new executive council was held in Dimapur in an event hosted by Naga Students' Federation on March 11 .

Consequently, the first meeting of the new executive council was also held in Dimapur, in which, NESO resolved to initiate necessary steps to mount pressure on the governments of NE states to identify illegal immigrants in the NE states, update NRC for all NE states and deport identified illegal immigrants to their respective countries.

In accordance to the decision, NESO will launch movement in the entire northeast, he said.

Besides, NESO is demanding the government to implement ILP System in the entire northeast, and exempt the northeast states from the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

NESO is also demanding the government not to conduct Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for the north eastern states as students of the region lag behind their counterparts in other parts of the country in many aspects.

NE students are being forced to pursue higher education in universities in other states instead of home states due to CUET, he said and added that the objection to CUET will remain until the educational infrastructure in the region is developed at par with rest of the country.

Moreover, NESO is demanding the government to make northeast the implementing zone for Act East Policy instead of turning the border states into gateways to South East Asia.

NESO will discuss the inter-state and international boundary issues and mount pressure on the state and central governments for permanent solutions to these issues.

They are also demanding establishment of more technical and non-technical institutions in the region, he said and added that they will meet heads of the states and central government leaders to pursue the demands.
