MP Bimol criticises CM for pinning hope on new Governor

Imphal, January 07 2025: Lok Sabha MP Prof Angomcha Bimol Akoijam criticised chief minister N Biren Singh, accusing him of admitting powerlessness in addressing the state's law and order issues by pinning hope on the new Governor for restoring peace.

Prof Bimol made the remarks during a public interaction programme held at the residence of ex-MLA Dr Kh Loken at Takhellambam Leikai, organised by the Sagolband Block Congress Committee.

The MP disagreed with the CM expressing confidence that peace would be restored under the state's new Governor.

He described it as an admission of failure, questioning why the Governor, whose role is to implement cabinet decisions, was discussing the state's security situation with law enforcement officials.

Law and order falls within the jurisdiction of the state, not the Governor, Prof Bimol said, referring to the constitutional pro visions.

He criticised the Governor's involvement as under mining the state's authority and labelled it as evidence of the CM's inability to govern effectively.

He further noted that Article 257(A), which previously allowed the Union Government to deploy armed forces for state law and order, was struck down by the Supreme Court, highlighting the constitutional limitations of central interference.

Prof Bimol also condemned the "One Nation, One Election" proposal, calling it an attempt to subvert the Constitution and federal structure.

"If the central government falls mid-term, would Manipur also hold mid-term elections?" he asked, explaining that the concept undermines the autonomy of states and erodes the federal structure.

The MP painted a grim picture of the current state of Manipur, likening it to "Jungle Raj", where power is wielded by force.

He highlighted the diminished capacity of the state police, the inability of ministers to enter certain areas, and the societal breakdown in morality and freedom of expression.

He pointed to the ethno-nationalist threats from the Kuki community as a danger to both Manipur's integrity and the state's authority.

Despite the dire situation, Prof Bimol called for bravery and public action.

"Bravery is not the absence of fear but doing the right thing despite knowing the danger," he said, urging people to show the same strength they demonstrated in the Lok Sabha election during the upcoming 2027 polls to bring about political change.

He assured the public that he would not hesitate to resign if his party mirrored the actions of the BJP-led central government in undermining the state.

The event was also attended by Khundrakpam MLA Th Lokeshwar, ex-MLA Dr Kh Loken, and leaders of the Sagolband Block Congress Committee.
