Tamenglong, June 05 2014:
C.Arthur W, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of Tamenglong has observed that despite observing World Environment Day every year and organising campaign for planting more trees, some people are simply unaware of the need to plant more trees to secure water for Tamenglong.
The DC was speaking at the inaugural function of the World Environment Day at Children Park, Tamenglong early morning today before flagging off a mass tree plantation and cleanliness drive in the district HQs.
He went on to point out that Gadai hill range is only the source of water for Tamenglong district HQs.
But the water source is drying up today because of indiscriminate felling of trees.

Retd.Maj Gaigonglung Kamei, who also spoke on the occasion, said that Tamenglong district of Manipur was once named as second rainiest area in the world after Cherrapunji.
However, Tamenglong is no longer the second rainiest place in the world today as the district receives very low rainfall and people are facing very hot weather.
"We have not heard birds singing at Medical gate now nor have we seen any squirrel.
We need to preserve our forest to provide shelter for flora and fauna and to provide us water", Retd.Maj G Kamei said.
Many volunteers including Bharat Scout and Guides came out and planted many trees and clean up the town area.
To mark the World Environment Day, Keikhumjanang, ADC member Tamenglong, also organised a tree plantation programme at Dailong Raengaan.
