Shiv Sena pitches for NRC implementation

Imphal, April 04 2023: Shiv Sena Manipur president M Tombi has said that the party will pressurise the President, the Prime Minister and the Union home minister for implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur in view of the unabated influx of illegal immigrants and the threat posed to the indigenous people.

Manipur is a small state and requires implementation of NRC in view of meagre population of indigenous people or else the native people would become extinct in near future, M Tombi told media persons at the party's office, Babupara, here, on Tuesday.

He said that the party will approach the national leaders, as well as state's chief minister and the Governor for implementation of NRC in Manipur.

He also said that time has come to implement NRC throughout the country so that rights of the citizens under democracy are ensured.

Even though reintroduction of the inner line permit (ILP) system provides constitutional safeguard to the indigenous people of the state at least to some extent now, many Bangladeshi and Myanmarese nationals, who entered Manipur before implementation of the ILP system have settled in different parts of the state particularly in the hills.

This is not just hearsay as there are enough proof and evidences, Tombi said, adding that as foreign nationals continue to enter Manipur through the porous international border the government needs to look into the matter seriously.

Stressing the need for sending a report about illegal influx to the Centre and conduct NRC, the Shiv Sena state leader said that it would be difficult to identify Indian citizens and illegal immigrants when train service begins in Manipur and outsiders flock into the tiny state.

On the other hand, M Tombi said that Shiv Sena is ready to field its own candidates in maximum number in the upcoming local body election.

While declaring that the party will re serve 33 percent of the seats for women candidates, he also informed that the party's national leaders would come to the state to campaign for the election.
