Imphal, August 30, 2012:
The suspected UG cadre who was slain by Imphal West commandos at Senjam Chirang on August 28 has been identified as S Tongpu of Ngakhapat, Saikul sub-division but staying in the quarters of Loitang Khunou Spinning Mill.
It is said that Tongpu stayed with his mother-in-law at the spinning mill quarters and used to work as brick-layer besides doing other odd jobs.
However, police claimed that Tongpu was involved in the abduction of Mangalam Plywood Factory accountant Radhakrishna Kanti Wada for ransom in addition to recovering one 9 mm pistol and one Chinese hand grenade from his possession.
Tongpu was killed in an encounter which broke out when police attempted to rescue Radhakrishna, police claimed.
But Tongpu's relatives were not convinced by this story and they were suspicious of some foul play.
Speaking to media persons at RIMS morgue today, Komrem Union Manipur president JL Karong said that Tongpu was a very hard-working man.
"We cannot accept the allegation that he was a UG cadre", Karong said.
He also appealed to the authority concerned to enquire and establish the facts and circumstances under which Tongpu was killed.
The corpse was handed over to family members after post mortem today.
Tongpu left behind one son and three daughters.
