Mao MLA Losii Dikho on Friday inaugurated the temporary shed of Mao-Imphal market on the eastern side of DM University campus here.
The inauguration function was also attended by Mayang Imphal MLA K Robindro, Imphal West deputy commissioner Th Kirankumar, SP Ksh Shivakanta Singh, Mao Business Women's Union, Mao Imphal Market Coordination Committee (MIMCC) convener Kh Athouba, MBC former secretary K Lossi and CSO leaders.
Speaking on the occasion, MLA Dikho stressed the need for the people to not only fight for their rights but also discharge their duties and contribute in uplift of the society so that the state could accelerate towards to real development.
Describing Manipur as a beautiful place where differ ent communities live peacefully, he opined that the Mao-Imphal market will not just be a business centre, but will help in building a healthy relationship among the people living in the state.
MLA Dikho also said that with the blessing of God, the soil of Mao is quite fertile, and the local farmers harvest lots of vegetables, flowers, fruits, etc.
"As all know, Mao is not a big area yet it contributes a lot in food production for the state and even provides to neighbouring areas like Kohima and Dimapur.
Agricultural produces from Mao are in high demand as they are organic," he added.
While conveying gratitude to the chief minister and the CSOs for allotting space for the market as well as for successfully organising it, L Dikho also exuded confidence that opening of the Mao-Imphal market will strengthen the age-old bond and play a vital role in the state's economic development.
Dikho further emphasised on increasing the agricultural production of the state to reduce dependency on other states.
Expressing his happiness over the market launch, MLA Dikho said such initiatives will not only bring people from the hills and valley closer but also improve the state's economy.
"I am very grateful to our chief minister for the initiative, support and encouragement from the very beginning to bring the people together and to maintain the integrity of the state," Dikho added.
On the other hand, MLA K Robindro stated that opening of such markets will help in improving the relationship between the hills and the valley and will also facilitate exchange of tradition and culture.
The Mao-Imphal market will remain open on all weekdays instead of the earlier practice of twice a week trading.
Meanwhile, representatives of Mao market vendors met chief minister N Biren on Friday and presented him organic vegetables and fruits from Mao in appreciation of government's efforts for opening the market.
Taking to Twitter, CM Biren said, "Delighted to share that the temporary Mao Market is now open at North AOC.
On this occasion, the women of temporary Mao Market visited and presented me some local products as a token of love".
Your affection and support inspire me to walk the extra mile every single day, Biren Singh added.
Earlier, CM Biren Singh also flagged off the daily bus services between Imphal and Mao to ferry the locally produced fruits and vegetables to Imphal.
Vegetables and fruits produced in the Mao area are known for their rich quality and are organic.
However, due to a lack of market in the state capital, earlier farmers from the Mao region used to transport their produce to the neighbouring state of Nagaland.
