In connection with the World Environment Day, troops of Red Shield Division conducted various activities at Aina, Leizangphai, Khoken, Parbung, Sinjol and Kangkap on June 4 and 5 to educate the people about of need for planting and nurturing of trees as well as on adopting scientific ways of cultivation in the area.
According to a statement issued by PRO Defence Wing, the activities conducted include tree plantation, painting competition for school children and environment awareness lectures by the Officers of Red Shield Division.
The statement further said that Jhum cultivation is a traditional and centuries old system of agriculture practiced in the entire North East which is largely responsible for the Green House effect in the environment.
Commercialisation and urbanization in the region has resulted in mass deforestation which will have significant effect on the eco system.
