DESAM volunteers released on bail

Imphal, June 19 2024:
Three volunteers of Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), who were arrested during a protest against recruitment of pre-primary teachers, have been granted bail by CJM Imphal West court on Wednesday.
The three volunteers are DESAM head office finance secretary Oinam Surjakanta, anti-drug abuse campaign secretary Khangembam Pilot and Imphal East District Council assistant secretary general Sorokhaibam Rokiyo.
All of them were released after furnishing PR bond of Rs 30,000 each.
Before release of the volunteers, students of many schools along with DESAM members formed human chains on the roadsides at different locations and raised slogans demanding release of the three.
Such protests were carried out along Pangei road in Imphal East, Tiddim line in Imphal West, Moirang in Bishnupur district and Kakching in Kakching district.
Regarding the protest, DESAM general secretary N Thoithoiba said all the three arrested DESAM volunteers have been released after the government put on hold recruitment of pre-pri-mary teachers.
However, the demand raised by DESAM regarding recruitment of qualified teachers under NCTE remains unchanged and the government should take a cabinet decision to uphold the demand.
He also said that DESAM Will continue with its democratic agitation despite release of its volunteers till fulfilment of the demand.
